God save our queen
For many years my grandmother Vera
Smith was a ‘royal watcher’ and respectful follower
of the British Monarch. Subsequently, from my youth I have heard
wonderful words spoken in honour of Queen Elizabeth. Nana went to
be with Jesus last year, and this last Christmas I decided to
listen to the Queens ‘Christmas message’ on
Nan’s behalf. I was both interested and encouraged by the
Queen’s words and spirit. I felt she made it very clear
that faith in Christ Jesus was of utmost importance in these
uncertain days. I prayed for the Queen – that God would
reveal Himself to her, protect her and comfort her, that he would
‘Save her’.
Now, by the time you read this
edition of the Omega Times, the 2nd of June will be
history, but I was really pleased to receive notification of a
special day of prayer to take place in Westminster Chapel on
Monday 2nd June, 2003 – a date of significance
in that it marks the fiftieth anniversary of Her Majesty's
Coronation.
The following by Stephen Green
(National Director of Christian Voice
www.christian-voice.org.uk) was forwarded to me regarding the day
of prayer:
“The nation celebrated at
some length last year, and at great expense, for Her Majesty's
Accession. Her Majesty's Coronation, by contrast, is in danger of
being quietly forgotten.
On Coronation Day, Her Majesty
took a solemn oath, in public and before God, to govern the
people entrusted to her care with justice and mercy, and to
maintain the Laws of God in her realm. During Her Coronation, Her
Majesty was anointed to govern in the Name of Christ, and given
the Holy Bible as "the rule for the whole life and government of
Christian princes." When she was presented with the Orb under the
Cross from the Crown Jewels, she was told to remember that "The
whole earth is subject to the reign of Christ our Redeemer."
Since then, successive governments
have caused Her Majesty to break her solemn oath. There are
obvious examples, such as the Abortion Act 1967, but in truth Her
Majesty's Governments have rebelled against every one of the Ten
Commandments. They fell for Satan's oldest lie. "Ye shall be as
gods, knowing good and evil." They were persuaded that man could
know better than God, that man's laws would be more enlightened
than God's laws. The effects of their rebellion - indeed of our
national rebellion - are now being felt as human anguish and
suffering in all Her Majesty's realm.
"There is no truth, nor mercy, nor
knowledge of God in the land. By swearing, and lying, and
killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out,
and blood toucheth blood. Therefore shall the land mourn, and
every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts
of the field and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the
sea also shall be taken away." (Hosea 4:1-3)
Britain has departed from
righteous laws, and our nation has fallen into sin and misery as
a consequence. Our nation has sown a wind of lawlessness and we
are reaping the whirlwind of God's judgment. We are no less
deserving of judgment than Sodom and Gomorrah, Canaan and
Nineveh, Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome. Each of those nations
turned the righteousness of God on its head and descended into
paganism and barbarism.
Each of them made their rulers
unaccountable to God or man, worshipped the creature not the
Creator, forgot righteous judgment, descended into immorality,
oppressed the poor, destroyed their family base,
institutionalised homosexuality, and killed their own children.
Each of them was sent by God down the rubbish chute of history.
Even Israel and Judah of old were dispossessed and over-run for
the same sins. We fool ourselves if we think we shall do any
better, especially as God's judgments are falling on us
progressively almost week by week. And knowing the whole counsel
of God in Holy Scripture, and voluntarily and solemnly promising
to be a nation under God, ruled under His authority, and having
received His great blessings and deliverance in times past, even
used of God to spread the Gospel around the world, the United
Kingdom is without excuse.
But God is gracious, and willing
to forgive. He desires not the destruction of the wicked, but
that they will turn from their wicked ways. "If that nation,
against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will
repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them." (Jeremiah 18:8)
We meet on Monday 2nd June, the
fiftieth anniversary of Her Majesty's Coronation, to pray that
the nation will return to Almighty God - at every level - but in
particular that Her Majesty's Government will repent of our
national law-breaking and begin to govern in righteousness, as
Her Majesty promised on that solemn day, fifty years ago.
We believe the fiftieth
anniversary of the day on which Her Majesty was crowned should be
marked with great reverence. Although we shall sing hymns of
prayer and exhortation, there will be no entertainment, for this
is a day on which to afflict our souls and cry out to God,
lifting holy hands in prayer. Would that Westminster Chapel would
be as full on 2nd June 2003 as Westminster Abbey was fifty years
previously, full of praying people, young and old, united in
spirit for God and our nation. Let us pray that Almighty God, of
His mercy, would make this a day of great weight before His
throne of Grace and powerfully answer our prayers. May He send
the desire for God and His ways, and the prayerful humility and
repentance which will heal our land, in the mighty name of Jesus
Christ.”
Whatever your views of the
Monarchy, or the actual extent of her Sovereignty, the Scriptures
teach us to pray for those in positions of authority (1 Timothy 2:2)
– for ultimately, all authority comes from God. It is
God who raises up and puts down.
Some argue “God can not have
raised up that person, they’re evil”. I believe that
‘ALL’ authority is ordained by God! Much can be
understood by looking at the story of Job: evil occurs in Jobs
life, but it was ‘seen, and allowed by God – for
God’s purpose’. It is the Romans 9 pattern. Times and
seasons in the purposes of God, and our warfare should be
directed according to the Scripture: “For we wrestle not
against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against
spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:12
Romans 13:1 “Let every soul
be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of
God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”
Titus 3:1 “Put them in mind
to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates,
to be ready to every good work.”
1 Peter 2:18 “Servants, be
subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and
gentle, but also to the froward.”
