The Peruvian President's pagan praises
The Straits Times, 1 August 2001, was headlined "Peru's
new leader pays respect to Inca gods" "Newly-minted President Alejandro
Toledo set the tone for his presidency one day after formally taking office,
honouring Peru's past by making offerings to the ancient mountain gods at the
country's premier archaeological site...
It was the first time that a Peruvian president had performed
a ceremony highlighting Andean traditions.
The Harvard-educated economist and former World Bank
consultant said he wanted to thank the apus and the pacha mama
(mother earth), another deity, 'for the strength and courage they gave me to
fight five campaigns on the road to recover democracy in Peru'...
Mr Toledo's wife Eliane Karp delivered a brief speech in
Quechua, the language of the Incas that is still widely spoken throughout the
Andean region...
About 45 per cent of Peru's population are of Indian
descent, while only 15 per cent are of European descent. Thirty-seven per cent
are mixed race, and the remaining 3 percent are Asian or black...
After the ceremony, Mr Toledo led a procession to the massive
Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman just outside Cuzco, the capital of the Inca
empire."
It is my own personal opinion that Mr Toledo has made a vast
mistake if he wishes his country to be prosperous, in turning against the true
and living God -– the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the father of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
We read in Exodus 20:5b "for I the LORD thy God am a
jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the
third and fourth generation of them that hate me;"
There is one thing we have learnt about God over the years.
He will not share His glory with another, particularly idols and statues which
cannot speak, feel, see or do any good for anybody who trusts in them.
We praise God that we serve one who is alive and interested
in the affairs of man.
In order to get to know Him, a born-again experience is
necessary through the precious blood of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who died
to take care of our sin problem. Do not die without experiencing this wonderful
life-change that comes about when Jesus Christ comes to live within your life.
